“The Web”

communal immersion experience 2025, metamorphosis, nashville, tn

This immersive experience was created at Metamorphosis in Nashville, TN for the winter solstice and remained on display through January of 2026.  Winter solstice marks the longest night of the year and invites a season of resting and gathering nourishment from the wisdom, and mystery and fertile darkness of the unconscious.  The immersive web, created of yarn, is a metaphor for this season.  The spider, an archetypal weaver of illusion and matter, shares her ingenuity  - the medicine of the interconnectedness of all things.  Obsidian, symbolizing protection and truth, was hung from the center-point of the web and was placed on the perimeter of the room, creating a safe container for participants to explore the deeper layer of their inner world.  Each participant was given a bowl of magnetized iron sand to place at the end of the string above their head.  While they rested and received nurturance through meditation, poetry, singing and a gong sound bath, the energy of their own experiences was magnetized into the sand. At the conclusion of the gathering, they placed a magnet into the bowl, causing the sand to shift and transform. This ritual gesture represented the integration of inner wisdom with outer life, honoring the gifts, insights, and renewal received through the experience..

During the installation of this immersion I became deeply aware of the relationship between precision and spontaneity. My process required the creation of a single point of geometry from which everything emerged at the center of the web, surrounded by other aspects that were more organic in shape. Through this experience, I gained a deeper understanding of how structure and freedom can coexist, each supporting and enhancing the other.
