“The Bee and the Wasp”, public installation
April 2022, Nashville, Tn
This installation was created for a public gathering in Nashville, TN. It celebrates the culmination of new life we find in spring, specifically honoring 2 pollinators, the bee and the wasp. The base structures of mirrors were used to highlight and reflect the sky coming in from the window behind. Local honeycomb, bees, honey, hellebore, and geodes were sourced through community members. Large pieces of earth from my and my neighbor's yard were dug up and displayed to showcase the everyday beauty found in nature right at home. Dogwood branches and fleabane were also sourced from my land. Citrine was used for its symbolism of abundance. Copper wire sculptures were created as a pairing to hold and amplify the importance of the way the bees work together in a collective to serve the whole. A piece containing a queen cell was highlighted in a circular section of comb.
The wasps had their own space, resting on geodes, with their paper wasp. Their environment was much simpler to highlight their natural beauty, as they tend to be more feared by people. The intention was to draw the eye to them, to really be able to view them in a new, appreciative way. By bringing all of these living elements together with the mirrors and sculptural objects in a wild and unexpected alchemy, I sought to reveal the hidden connections between seemingly separate forms, celebrating the interdependence and unity that exists throughout the natural world.
