“Union Portal”, ceremonial installation 2023
This installation was commissioned for a marriage ceremony on private land in Nashville, TN. With the exception of a few found objects, everything in the environment was constructed from natural materials, centered around an existing stone wall. The process of creating with the couple to be married started with sacred intention, energy work and connection to the land. As a group, we walked the land to gather stones, branches and plant material for the ceremonial space.
Along with the fire glow of candles, the organic shapes of the natural materials merge together to create a sense of beauty and wonder. There are little vignettes of detail and love infused all throughout the space. Two lions uplift a crystal sphere while two hands form a sacred chalice holding the Water of Life. Above, a sky-facing mirror adorned with seeds symbolizes creation and new beginnings. Hidden personal objects from the couple are woven into the design, while stones at the base provide a foundation of stability, strength, and enduring love.
A reoccurring component of my work is balance. Without using wire, string or other hanging materials, creating a structure that relies on gravity and balance is a practice in and of itself. This is a particularly powerful theme when woven into a union ceremony, symbolizing a shared life and future together.
